The Latin language

The Latin language belongs to the Italian branch of the Indo-European language family. Latin originated in Rome and the surrounding areas, but the language grew rapidly with the political power of the Roman Empire. As a result, Latin was Europe's dominant written language throughout the Middle Ages and for many years after. Latin developed into the language of intellectuals, used by the cultural elite of Europe, and was long known as the "international cultural language of the West". For a long time, it also served as an international diplomatic language, before French took over this position. Today, Latin is mainly used in the medical profession and in certain Catholic circles, but it remains one of the most important languages in world history.
