The History of The Italian Language

Like all Romance languages, Italian comes from Latin. Ancient writings discovered in ninth century Verona have served the foundation for the subsequent evolution of Italian. Italian continued to evolve over the centuries. In the beginning, it was a counterpart of Latin, which was spoken by the more highly educated members in society. During urbanization, municipalities wrote their decisions in Italian, so that it could be understood by the majority of citizens. Italian really only began to gain a presence in literature in the thirteenth century. This led to greater development of the language: The countless dialects were compiled into one standard language.

The Italian Language Today

Italian is spoken by about 70 million people, most of which live in Italy. The language is also spoken in parts of Switzerland, France, Croatia, Slovenia, and of course in the Vatican City. Italian is the official language of Italy, Switzerland, San Marino, and the Vatican City. Thanks to colonization, Italian is still spoken outside of European borders.

The three existing dialects, North, Central, and Southern, can be divided into even more regional dialects. They are often referred to as their own languages. They do in fact differ from each other considerably. The northern population has issues understanding the southern speaking styles. The Sicilian dialect in particular differs heavily. Most people would describe Italian as a pleasant language. It sounds soft and friendly.

Grammar

Italian conjugation is similar to that in both French and Spanish. Learning Italian grammar would cause no problems for someone who has already mastered a Romance language. There are two genders, the masculine (male) and the feminine (female). Verb conjugation depends on the person. Verbs are categorized as regular or irregular. Personal pronouns are only used for emphasis. The person is defined by the form of the verb. There are twelve tenses in Italian which are formed with the verb. There are several action forms for verbs such as continuous and progressive. Words and nouns are written in lower-case with minor exceptions. The translator must have mastered the special features of the Italian language down to the very last detail. This is the only way for the text to be translated with precision. To meet this challenge, we work exclusively with native speaking translators. They are not only familiar with the Italian language, but with Italian (business) culture as well. We also take the specific subject area into consideration. We then select the translator based on whether or not they possess the required know-how in the field. If you have any questions or would like a free consultation, we look forward to your call.
