Latin – Professional translations of the “dead language”
The Latin language, or lingua latina, is an Indo-European language that was once spoken by the inhabitants of Rome and Latium. Latin is now classified as a “dead language,” since it’s no longer spoken, and it’s the official language only of the Vatican State.
However, translations from Latin are not uncommon for us. Latin is still used, especially in theology and medicine. For us, this is reason enough to also offer Latin translations.
A convoluted history
There is written evidence of the Latin language dating back as far as the 5th century B.C. From the 3rd century B.C. onwards, longer texts were written in Old Latin. In the 1st century B.C., classical Latin reached its full flower as the official language of the Roman Empire and spread throughout the western Mediterranean.
Lingering presence of Latin
Spoken Latin, or Vulgar Latin, died out along with the Roman Empire or developed into the Romance languages. However, the classical Latin of Roman writers and scholars remained, even into the Middle Ages, and held its status as the dominant language in literature, science, politics, and the rites of the Catholic Church.
All the major scholars of this period, such as Copernicus, Descartes, Luther, Newton, Nostradamus, and Paracelsus, wrote their texts in Latin. Until modern times, lectures at universities were held in Latin, so it long remained an official language of the Holy Roman Empire, Poland, and Hungary.
Many loanwords and foreign words in a variety of languages – even whole phrases – are of Latin origin. When science needs to name a new discovery, that name is usually in Latin.
In addition to their academic training, our translators also have knowledge in different subject areas. So, no matter whether your Latin text comes from the medical, legal, or theological field, we will always find the best translator for it.
